I recently saw Dr Mahmud about a Chalazion in the lower left eyelid. Surprisingly, he immediately contacted Dr Idrees of Imperial Avenue Southend (ophthalmologist) who agreed to see me that afternoon. I was quite pleased at such speedy service and went to see Dr Idrees. His consulting rooms did not inspire confidence since the equipment used was rather grubby with quite a lot of debris in the head support. He suggested that I had the start of glaucoma and that my chalazion required surgery which was booked for a later appointment. When I got home, I checked NHS Direct and found useful advice about chalazions including that they usually clear up of their own accord over a lengthy period! I cancelled my appointment for the intended surgery and decided to get my eyes checked through Vision Express (I had not had an eye test in more than six years!). The Optometrist at Vision Express gave me a very thorough examination and informed me that there was no sign of glaucoma, that both eyes had the beginnings of cataracts that should not need treatment for around ten years, that my eyesight had improved and my chalazion could be treated with hot compresses each evening and would probably disappear over a period of months! Having had my faith in Dr Idrees somewhat challenged I decided to check his status with The Royal College of Opthalmology (zero result), The GMC (they quote a Dr Idrees who registered in November 2014 but was not on the specialist register and they could not confirm that the ophthalmologist that I saw was the same person), The CQC (they had a reference to “Provider: Dr Mohammed Idrees Also known as Consulting Room” and that the service was registered in January 2014 but had not been inspected). It may be useful to other patients if, when referred to a specialist, your surgery could provide details of that specialist (e.g. GMC reference number). For referrals to NHS hospitals that would not be necessary since qualifications etc. are usually well established and easily accessible.

As an NHS employee, I understand the difficulties that we all face regardless of our services, with budget cuts and patients needs to be met. I have always recognised the service that Jones Family Practice have provided through these difficulties. I have had a problematic year with my health with one thing or another, and have seen several Doctors in the practice, but these are not serious, I am generally healthy. My youngest daughter is also a patient and has had to see a Doctor on a few occasions. Dr Navalle has treated my daughter with empathy and kindness which resulted in her coming back to him for monitoring. It was difficult for her and I have to say that his attitude towards her and his kindness has to be recognised, thank you Dr Mamoud as usual is also extremely professional, and always takes the time to talk through your symptoms and explain everything to you. he is an excellent Doctor. Dr Tucker has treated and referred me this year, and again was patient and kind when discussing the symptoms, and referring me has made my life pain free through this referral. Dr Liu, is again an exceptional Doctor, her professionalism is amazing and her kindness and patience makes you at ease when you have personal issues. Thank you to this surgery , the whole experience is kindness and patience and makes you feel that you are being listened to and not judged, we are very lucky to have these Doctors at our surgery. A further mention to the Receptionists, they are again very kind and professional. Thank you all Shirley Lough

Once you get to see a DR its fine but actually getting to see one you have to run the gauntlet of the appointment stasi. The unbelievably stupid "appointments on the day are for emergencies" drives me nuts, if its an emergency I wont be hanging on hold for half an hour. Unless you are elderly or a child don't bother.

I recently came to the surgery with a nasty spot on my arm which came up whilst I was on holiday. I was seen by Dr. Lawson who thought it was most likely an infected insect bite and put me on a course of anti-biotics. I then went back to see him soon after I finished the course because the infection appeared to have gone and it was less painful. However since there was still a lump there he sought the opinion of Dr Lu, who thought there was possibly a small cyst which should be removed. Rather than refer me to hospital they thought it could me removed in the surgery by Dr. Mahmoud. They made an appointment for 4pm that afternoon and it was all done by 4.30pm. They made me feel so at ease. I must say that we are so lucky to have such a wonderful surgery and set of efficient, caring Doctors, Nurses and staff in general. Thank you Jones Family Practice. I was amazed to get a 12.10 appointment when I phoned around 8.45. I saw Dr Lawson who, it appears, is at the surgery for 4 months for training. He was brilliant. Totally listened to me while looking me I the eyes. Was interested in my condition. Carried out some examination. Gave treatment some thought and appeared to research it on the computer. Told me, in detail, what he thought was the problem. Arranged tests, gave advice on pain management in the meantime and didn't give me the impression he just wanted to get me out the door.
